Hard To Believe

Its hard to believe that almost sixty years have passed since the last trams ran along Lytham Road to Squires Gate Lane. Seen here during the final year of service in 1961 re two recently repainted contrasting cars at Squires Gate terminus. The latest twist in the tram livery by this time was the instruction from 'upstairs' to amend the rail coach styling on both English Electric and Brush cars. This involved continuing the cream band above the saloon windows to surround the driver's cab windscreens. The author managed to catch examples of both types at Squires Gate terminus (along with a smart Ford Zephyr and Morris Minor). A well dressed local resident walks her son in the background whilst bare trees can be seen in the distance lining Lytham Road's upmarket homes. Photo : John Woodman
